1 hour east of Cincinnati’s Eastgate Mall
1 ½ hours from the Greater Cincinnati Airport
1 ½ hours from Lexington, Kentucky
2 hours from Dayton, Ohio
2 hours from Columbus, Ohio
2 ½ hours from Charleston, West Virginia
3 hours from Indianapolis, Indiana

Don’t use your GPS to find Hopewell Croft.  It will direct you down one-lane gravel roads, and drop the signal at crucial turns. 
 

Route 1 from Cincinnati (fast)  

From Cincinnati Ohio: Take Route 32 through rolling farmlands to Winchester, Ohio. At Winchester, turn right onto Highway 136 South. Pass Governor Kirker’s Covered Bridge, then turn right onto Highway 41. Suck Run Road is on the right, 1.8 miles past Bentonville. Turn right on Suck Run Road and watch for us on the right, 2 ½ miles from Highway 41.

Route 2 from Cincinnati (scenic)

From Cincinnati Ohio:  Route 52 is a two-lane highway that hugs the river and provides a scenic and leisurely drive. It’s about 90 minutes from Cincinnati’s Coney Island to Hopewell Croft by this river road.

As you head east on Route 52, you’ll pass Point Pleasant, Ulysses S Grant’s birthplace, and the Augusta Ferry, as well as the Rankin House Museum and John Parker’s house and workshop, significant points on the Underground Railroad.

When you reach Aberdeen, Ohio, turn left (north) onto Highway 41. Suck Run Road is on the left, about 10 miles from Route 52. If you reach Bentonville, on Highway 41, you passed the turn-off. Suck Run Road is 1.8 miles south of Bentonville. We are on the right, 2 ½ miles west of Highway 41.

Route from Columbus, Ohio

From Columbus Ohio: Take Route 23, South, through Chillicothe. Here, you may want to take the time to visit the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park. Leaving Chillicothe, continue south, past picturesque Lake White State Park. Turn right, west on Route 32. At Peebles, Ohio, turn left, south, on Highway 41. Drive through the Amish countryside, past West Union and Bentonville. Suck Run Road, is 1.8 miles south of Bentonville. We are on the right, 2 ½ miles west of Highway 41. 

Route from Lexington, Kentucky

From Lexington KY: Take Highway 68, north, through horse country, to Maysville, Kentucky. Cross the Ohio River and turn left. In a half-mile, turn right on Highway 41. Suck Run Road is on the left, about 10 miles from Route 52. If you reach Bentonville, on Highway 41, you passed the turn-off. Suck Run Road is 1.8 miles south of Bentonville. We are on the right, 2 ½ miles west of Highway 41. 

Near the Cabin

West Union is just 15 minutes north of Hopewell Croft. Visit the Olde Wayside Inn, the oldest standing inn in Ohio, still in use. Enjoy their crispy fried chicken and delicious chocolate cake. You’ll find grocery stores and fast food restaurants in West Union.

Just north of West Union, the Amish operate several thriving businesses. Don’t miss Miller’s Bakery and Furniture, on Wheat Ridge Road, or Keim Family Market on Burnt Cabin Road.

About 45 minutes north of the cabin, off Highway 41, past Peebles, Ohio, you’ll find Serpent Mound, operated by the Arc of Appalachia and the Ohio Historical Society.

The Rankin House and Parker House are south, about 30 minutes, at Ripley, Ohio. These museums help tell the story of the Underground Railroad and the people who risked their lives to help slaves escape to freedom. While you’re in Ripley, stop in for a soda at Rockin’ Robin’s Soda Shoppe.

Also, south of the cabin, the epicurean will enjoy a casual dinner at Moyer’s Winery, on the river near Aberdeen, Ohio, or white tablecloth elegance at Caproni’s on the River in Maysville, Kentucky.

Historic Maysville, Kentucky, across the Ohio River, is home to Old Washington, established in 1786, and Old Pogue Distillery, making bourbon for six generations.

Hopewell Croft is on a paved road that is part of the Buckeye Trail. This 1400-mile long hiking trail winds into every corner of the state. Or take the 4.4 mile trail to Buzzard’s Roost. It’s spectacular.

You can enjoy public hunting at the new Eagle Creek Wildlife Area about 25 minutes south-east of the cabin or at Tranquility Wildlife Area 30 minutes north. River and lake fishing is nearby. You can paddle your own canoe or kayak on Ohio Brush Creek. The Ohio River boat ramp at Aberdeen, Ohio is only 20 minutes away.
